Medium-Term Health Impacts of Shocks Experienced In Utero and After Birth: Evidence from Detailed Geographic Information on War Exposure
نویسندگان
چکیده
We estimate the impact of armed conflict on subsequent health outcomes using detailed geographic information on households’ distance from conflict sites—a more accurate measure of conflict exposure—and compare the impact on children exposed in utero versus after birth. The identification strategy relies on exogenous variation in the conflict’s geographic extent and timing and the exposure of different birth cohorts while in utero or after birth. Results show warexposed children subsequently have lower height-for-age Z-scores, and impacts using GPS information are 2-3 times larger than they would be if exposure is measured at the imprecise regional level. Effects of exposure in utero and after birth are comparable in magnitude. Results are robust to including region-specific time trends, alternative conflict measures, and addressing possible bias due to selective migration. Disruptions in health care delivery and maternal stressors are potential mechanisms explaining the negative health effects for conflict exposed children.

In utero exposure to the Korean War and its long-term effects on socioeconomic and health outcomes.
Prenatal exposure to the disruptions caused by the Korean War (1950-1953) negatively affected the individual socioeconomic and health outcomes at older ages. The educational attainment, labor market performance, and other socioeconomic outcomes of the subjects of the 1951 birth cohort, who were in utero during the worst time of the war, were significantly lower in 1990 and in 2000. The results ...

The Fetal Origins Hypothesis (FOH), put forward in the epidemiological literature and later flourished in the economics literature, suggests that the time in utero is a critical period for human development. However, much attention has been paid to the consequences of fetal exposures to more extreme natural shocks, while less is known about fetal exposures to milder but more commonly experience...
متن کاملLong-Term Effects of the Korean War on Economic and Health Outcomes
This paper explores how prenatal exposure to the disruption in the early stages of the Korean War affected various socioeconomic and health outcomes at older ages. A number of socioeconomic outcomes, including educational attainment and the quality of occupation around age 50, were significantly lower for the birth cohorts who were in utero during the first nine months of the war. The disadvant...

This paper employs a multivariate dynamic conditional correlation GARCH model, which is developed by Engle (2001, 2002), to detect the timing and nature of changes in the comovement between Iranian output and prices for the periods after Iran–Iraq war , known as imposed war . The results showed that there is a weak correlation between output and prices after imposed war and varies periodically...
متن کاملImpact of Early Life Shocks on Human Capital Formation: Evidence from El Niño Floods in Ecuador
A growing body of research argues that early adverse experiences have lasting effects not only on later health outcomes, but also on human capital accumulation. In this paper, I investigate the persistent effect of negative shocks early in life on children’s health and cognitive outcomes, and explore whether shocks at certain periods matter more than others. I exploit the geographic intensity o...
